To all with potential insights/solutions-

I work with a group of divers/scientists in the on a marine debris mapping/recovery project. We use inflatable 18' AVON hulls and two Honda BF30A engines (30 hp, 4-stroke OHC/carborated in-line 3 cylinders, diaphragm fuel pumps) per hull.

The system of running the boats empty/full (i.e. filled with recovered fishing gear upto 3/4 ton/boat) has worked well...however, there have been a couple of cases when the engines have stalled out in seas greater than five feet. Both engines typically stall at the same time, usually after a boat transits over the top of a wave (no problem), over a peak and then down the backside (stalls with the bow oriented towards troughs between waves, stern oriented towards the peak).

These incidents are rare, but a potential problem in situations (e.g. running a pass) when stalled engines could result in a flipped boat (or worse). We've tried mounting the engines @ different spots on the transom but that has not alleviated the problem. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jay

jma,

Please provide some further detail.

As an example, what is the attitude of the engines when the stall? (ie, out of water, tilted up, bow up, bow down, etc.)

Do both engines stall at the same time?

What type of fuel system?

I'll take a stab at it.
Is it possible upward/downward/pitching motion under those partcular conditions is causeing the fuel to slosh out of the carb bowls? Causeing the motors to flood out?
What is the estimated RPM when this occured?
How was the restarts immediately after it stalled?

Was it possible something interfered with the manuel choke lever? Something on the transom pulling the lever out temporarily, essentially chokeing it out?
