Easy to complain, but I have to give credit

I have been reading about some of the automotive woes we have all been facing and it sucks. But in defense of my Ford Freestyle I got back in June/July, I have turned 20K and I have to say, this is one neat car. It has given me not a moments problem and is as solid as the day I took delivery. Not a rattle anywhere. The brakes are huge and very effective. I have the AWD model and it is a snowmobile. Better in snow than my bronco I swear. It handles like no "wagon" I have ever driven. Try taking an off ramp at 65 or so and the tires don't squeel and the suspension holds the road like velcro.

Gas mileage has been around 24 on the highway which is what was advertised. It is surprisingly versitile and much larger than a picture would indicate. I am 6'4" and it has just enough leg room and head, shoulder, and hip room are great. Note the seat coverings tend to hold stains from french fries and the like and feel a little cheap but they are insainly comfortable and haven't shown any signs of wear. Just kind of a strange material. Driving position is high but not like a true SUV or truck. Rear view mirrors are huge like a truck. Visibility is fine and the rear window is cleaned well by the wiper/washer setup.

This thing does everything pretty well. For a family of 4 this could do everything you need a vehicle to do. It is rated to tow up to 2000lbs. Reliability from my research has been outstanding. Everyone who ownes one seems to like it. This is not a road racer and the 0-20mph times are a bit slow, but you can put your foot into her and make her move quite smartly. All other speeds she moves real well. The CVT constantly variable transmission is an interesting bird. But you will get used to it and it really moves the car along quickly in passing situations and has proven to be reliable from my limited research and personal experience.

Three things, continental tires that come with are loud and I don't care for them, factory radio is weak, as weak a factory radio I have seen since my 1974 duster and the wiper controls are a little confusing. I still have issues picking the right ones front/rear.

I beleive this is built on the XC/90 volvo platform. Try pricing one of those out (big $$$). It is a proven and very safe design. It is also rumored that this rig is going to be discontinued for whatever reason. That should make it a pretty good buy on the secondary market and probably force ford into deep discounts for remaining units on the lots.

I know the rule of not buying a first year model but this thing is as good a car as I have owned in many many years. It many be one of those sleeper buys in then next year or so. Kudos to ford for a really dependable and versatile vehicle unique to all others on the road. A big thumbs up from a rather particular car owner.

That is cool. I hadn't realised it was the Volvo chassis. Honestly, that piques my interest. I agree, cars that are not popular can be the best used values if they are decent despite their appeal. I learned this with a SAAB. They have horrible resale, but you can get a very fun to drive and luxurious car for well under $20K and still in warranty.

QC,

If you need a good family/business car I can't recommend one better. It is on the boring side from an engine performance perspective, but drive her aggressively and you can feel the design pedigree. Like a rail. Smooth controlled and full of features like traction control, AWD, big wheels, very mild off road capabilities. Just a unique and versitile vehicle with what I think is a potential to be a long term, dependable vehicle, with low insurance rates. Much like your Saab analogy but probably easier to get parts and service.

I am off to get my new expedition's differential looked at. Yep, whinning and clunking during the downshift. I am so bummed. I wanted to ask you if you have had any satisfaction with yours. I am sidetracking my own thread but nobody seems to be real interested anyways.

I'm interested but I have nothing to input until I can discover what a freestyle is. We (aussies) must have it, I just need to find under which badge it is marketed.

Pointer, I looked at the Freestyles because I really like their exterior styling and ability to quickly configure the interior for cargo.

I ended up buying a fully loaded Escape which (so far) has been 100% trouble free for me as well. The fit and finish has been perfect and i opted for the premium stereo which was worth the extra money. I only average 21.5 mpg with the V6 AWD 4 speed auto and get 23-24 mpg on the highway.

I biotched a little on the Ford thread, but that has been my experience with this Expedition. I absolutely love the truck in general, but there are some little things that just aren't right. I would consider another though, and the Freestyle would be fun, but is totally different I understand. I would love to drive a diesel Touareg. The tow tests have been very good and I also understand the XC90 is a decent tow vehicle, so the rating on the Freestyle seems low. Aren't they getting close to 5000 lbs nowadays with the Volvo?

Pointer, your comment about parts availability is a good one. I do most minor repairs myself and even here in LA I have to drive about 40 minutes to get parts for a SAAB, 8 minutes to the Ford dealer.

QC,

The new funky transmission and the 3.0l duratec engine is a nice performer but I am sure that the rating on a first year vehicle is always a little conservative. But I checked and the tow rating is 2000lbs. I will say the brakes are bigger than you would expect and uses a two cylinder brake configuration. Not bad for a grocery getter. So whatever it get moving it surely will be able to stop. Really really good brakes. The low end torque just seems a little lacking for much greater than 2000lbs in my opinion. The Volvo uses a more conventional transmission and I think they are still making that 5 cylinder turbo engine. Sweet set up. Get the high boost turbo and those volvos turn into rockets.

Oh, I love CVTs. Haven't driven one yet, but I am very interested in them . . . ;)

Quick question, will it accelerate without the RPM changing? i.e. gearing change only, RPM staying fixed.

Doesn't DJ have one of these too?

Yes, you can actually accellerate with the rpm's going down. It is somewhat unsettling to some of us traditionalists. Play the pedal right and yes you can do as you asked. I think that the transmission is the thing I like the least about the car but you know what they say about old dogs.

I still prefer a manual, so go figure . . .

CVTs are gonna start popping up in a lot of applications if you ask me. I think they are an engineer's dream. Any power-plant with any rear end ratio with any tire size. Solves a lot of stuff.

Everyone I have talked to says they are a little weird to get used to. I wonder if there is any weirdness if you can't hear the engine? i.e. with no audible RPM reference would it still be "unsettling"?

Mercedes and Mitsubishi have been using them for over 12 months.

Pointer,

My sentiments exactly on the Freestyle.
I have 15K-NO ISSUES whatsoever.

My Fuel economy has been better. But, mine is a 2 wheel drive.

The Audiophile soundsystem is a MORE than enough. It turns it into a "thumper".

I love the CVT. It's hard for me to get into the wifes 05 Mustang and feel all those shifts. Although my foot is usually in it.

;)

THe CVT does an amazing job in hills-no abrupt downshifts and the engine braking on downgrades is great. It will hold cruise control speed on any grade, up or down.

All in all,the car is a WINNER. The CVT, for me,is just icing on a great cake.

Pointer is right about the brakes. They are HUGE. THe same goes for the 500 and Montego.

So if the car is great why is Ford getting rid of it? Ive driven one while I was in Alaska, decent vehicle but it sure seemed cheap inside, whats up with that headliner and other cheap plastic? Maybe I am biased im used to Volvo.

I am glad you guys are happy with your vehicles with 20,000 miles on them. When my $28,000 truck (Chevy rant thread) had 20k on it, I was happy with it also. Please update when it has 80k -100k. Merry Christmas!!!

They're not, it's going to Lincoln Mercury
(refreshed and upscale) to be replaced by next gen. Todays market place does not allow a vehicle to remain in a line up forever. Can't wait to 100K, again, the marketplace. Initial quality is a pretty good determnent of overall quality.

If you want the Volvo version, pay the Volvo price.

I was listening to a local independent shop owner, on the radio, yesterday. He said the only difference between foreign cars, in the similar price ranges, and Ameican brands is the the willingness of owners to maintain the foreign brands.

I found that intetresting, coming from a guy whose shop works on everything.

Correct me if im wrong but it hasnt even been out 2 years yet right? We hardly see any on the roads here in the northeast (southern Maine). Just seems kinda wierd that even in todays market a car wouldnt live longer than 2 model years. I will pay the Volvo price :)

Change is for '08' that makes three. It was intro'd as an '05'. Even then, it's a freshening and going upscale. So, it will live on, in various forms.

I gave my opinion. I didn't expect to have to defend it. Guess I was wrong.
