1985 SUZUKI DT-115
IS THER A EASY WAY TO DO A DYNAMIC TIMING TEST. DO I HAVE TO RUN IT AT WOT IN GEAR? IF I DO THIS CAN IT STILL BE STRAPPED TO THE TRAILER? IT IS ON A 17-FT BOAT.

Re: EASY TIMING

Hi,

1985 SUZUKI DT-115
-----------
OK, since it is a 1985 DT115 syncronization may be needed (timing carburator operation to the ignition timing advance). On newer models of DT115 there is no mechanical interface between these systems.

IS THER A EASY WAY TO DO A DYNAMIC TIMING TEST.
------------
1) It must be done in a test tank with a test wheel (partno test wheel: 09914-79420, for DT115 and DT140). The purpose of a test wheel is to put some load on the propeller shaft and preventing engine damage from excessive rpm during testing in a tank.

OR

2) With the boat in the water BUT it is not recommended because checking the timing with a stroboscope while running on the water is not easy or safe at all.

(Maybe, but I do not know for sure, if you have the boat on trailer and can put the lower unit in a barrel and can use a test wheel that can work.)

DO I HAVE TO RUN IT AT WOT IN GEAR?
-------------
According to instructions after reaching operating temp (after about 5 min) there is first at 900 rpm or less , in neutral and fully closed throttle, a test where you point the timing light at the timing pointer and it should align at 6 deg ATDC mark on the flywheel.
Adjust if needed and then if OK, You should disconnect the throttle cam link and move the remote control lever to wide open throttle position and point the timing light at the timing pointer and it should align with the 25 deg BTDC mark on the flywheel. Maximum advance is specified at 23 deg BTDC +-1 deg at 5000 rpm OR at 2000 rpm there should be a time lag of 2 deg BTDC resulting in a reading of 25 deg BTDC.
Adjust if needed. When OK connect the throttle cam link again.

Above is from Clymer manual for Suzuki, DT115 1985 (page 116-117, 131-132, 139).

IF I DO THIS CAN IT STILL BE STRAPPED TO THE TRAILER? IT IS ON A 17-FT BOAT.
------------
Maybe, maybe not, depends on if you find a suitable barrel ("test tank") and a Suzuki test wheel for your DT115.
It can be done in the boat on water but it is kind of unsafe to run a 115 hp outboard at full throttle and do this test... (maybe you can use the 2000 rpm and adjust according to that, se above).

I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before so I know some about Suzuki 2-strokes, but on newer Suzuki outboard like the one I had there is need to make engine timing/syncronization. I use Yamaha 4-stroke now (F115, 2003).

/Bo

Re: EASY TIMING

YES yoy can do this in a test tank or on muffs or in water cause the engine do not rew more than aprox 2000rpm when you just advance the ignition in neutral . have done this myself. works great just be careful with the wires to the strobelight! that spinning flyweel....... ;)
