Early 90s Merc 150 2 stroke overheats while wakeboarding

I've been helping a friend troubleshoot this issue for probably 5 years now. He has replaced the impeller and housing multiple times, new popit, and new thermostats (2x). The boat always seems to run fine until we start wakeboarding. Even if we are not falling, the boat still overheats and the buzzer turns on. At idle for ~30 sec the buzzer will turn off. We tried going wakeboard speed without a boarder and it didn't buz. Then we tried going a bit faster with a rider and not cutting (just riding straight outside the wake) and it was fine for ~10 min so we started cutting pretty hard without issue. that was going about 25 mph vs our normal about 20 mph. I read some things that these engines will start to suck air into the cooling system when you are at plow speed (~20 mph with a boarder) where it rides a bit nose high, and you have to mess with the throttle to keep it on plane without accelerating, or coming off plane. We removed the thermostats, and it seemed to get worse and would buzz even without a boarder. We also noticed water coming out the weep hole on the popit. I've seen some people mention adding a water pressure gauge but I didn't find anything. I have also seen people say that they replace the impeller every year. I've been around boats my entire life and that seems crazy. His boat is in a fresh water river and has most definitively sucked up some of the fine sand over the years. I think a full flush with no thermostats or popit would be wise, but I'm not sure where to shoot the hose water in. If someone has some info on what we may be overlooking, or any advice that would be much appreciated.

Not a pro, but also having over heating problems w/ a 150. In many discussions, with what I consider a top notch mechanic, he advised me that water from the weep hole on the poppit means that the diaphram is busted. Have you taken the poppit down. I was leary at first, but its not a bad job. You have to remover the bottom cowling. Do a search, I found it but can't remember the link. Good luck...BF

we have replaced the popit before. We might try the cutting the spring trick.

Maybe the prop is too "tall" for the load inherent to wakeboarding? Can you try a prop with 2" less pitch?

Its got a 5 blade and is too "small" for my taste (but he likes it). It will yank you out hard, but you can over rev at full throttle.

Gee, pull the gearcase, remove the 'stats and poppit valve and attempt to backflush the motor thru the thermostat openings, poppit valve opening and the water hoses that are on the powerhead, and finally put a water hose onto the water pipe. See if you can get all the sand out of her.

Where or what is the water pipe? We plan on flushing through all the other ports you mentioned.

Water pipe is the copper tube that connects to the waterpump.

I ran into this same problem several years ago on a Baja ski boat, as long as skiers where inline behind boat it ran fine but let em start cutting and pulling off the sides it would get hot. After a lot of head scratching, t-stats, poppet divider plate gaskets, I installed a water pressure gauge and thats what found it!!! When skiers where pulling of the sides of boat the engine would "crab" walk thru the water and you could watch the water pressure drop as the skier was pulling boat one way and driver was countering by turning opposite. Installed set of side scoops(Mercury #17280A2 ) and never had anymore problems!!!!
