I have a 25hp 2 stroke merc. When putting it into reverse it will go into gear, then seems to slip out of gear. Putting it in neutral and forward has no issues. Only when putting it in reverse. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

Check the cable adjustment. Also make sure the shift coupling behind the carb is in good shape and the washer on the shift shaft is not bound up in the wire.

Ok here's what I'm looking at. Which cable would I adjust?

Pretty sure it's the Lower cable but first check the linkage behind the carb and the washer on the shift shaft.

You're talking this guy right. I had the shift shaft off earlier. is there a bushing that goes inside the shifter or just the shift shaft and the washer. I did put a new cotter key in.

To get to the shift linkage you need to take the electric starter off and it's behind the carb. The washer is under the boot where the shift rod goes down through the lower cowling. Under that rubber boot is a washer that can get hung up in the tilt mechanism preventing it from going into reverse.

Ah ok. I had the starter off until this year when I replaced it. I didn't notice anything but I'll take a look again this coming weekend when I'm back out there. I can get it to go into reverse and it will stay in it at a low rpm. Once I give more power to it is when it will kick itself out of reverse and make a noise where it sounds partially engaged but not fully.
