I have a early 80s merc 40 2cyl. Starts idles and runs fine all the way up to the brick wall of 2100 rpm. Every now and agai. You can hear it and feel it try to open up but only for brief second. Checked butterfly in carb and is turned open. Checked plugs for spark looks good. Compression is 120 psi on both cylinders. Motor is electric start. Any ideas?

I am also having a very similar problem. It seems that the general consensus has to do with anything the fuel touches. From the tank all the way to the last carb. Air leaks. Fuel pickup. Primer bulb. Fuel pump. Carb jets. Etc. I'll have to check mine very thoroughly. Have you checked all yours?

I have single carb. Havent tore apart but looks good. From outside looking in. Boat has no sputtering get up and goes fine just stalls at the 2100 rpm. Ive had a couple people say stator issue not telling it to advance??? Not really sure where to go with it. Tank looks good and bulb stays hard. Its hitting on both cylinders. Any idea where to find a resistance chart for the electrical componets? My cousin has had a few mercury 2 strokes says they have gave him thw same grief and has had to change the stator on 3 or 4 of them. Sounds like a common problem on the older 2stroke mercs?
