early 70's 40hp merc

I have an early 70's 40hp merc. was wondering if they have head gaskets or what? Problem is i have water shooting out of lower cylinder. This just happened without any warning. Any info would be helpful to determine if engine is worth fixing or parting out.

J.W., is the water coming from around the spark plug? if it is the gasket that covers the cyl. domes is bad and needs replaced .but if you have the spark plugs out and water is coming out of the spark plug hole you are in deep doo!!hopefully it is coming from around the spark plug .let us know
