Recently got steam from both valve covers in the original 305 and decided to go with a "newer" 350. The 305 was cast in 77 and the 350 in 86. Went to local marine salvage and picked up flywheel, engine coupler, and starter because of the one piece crank seal versus the old two piece. The 350 is a used engine purchased from an idividual who swore it to be a good marine engine, but the engine had been pulled a couple years ago so no compression test and of course couldn't hear it run. The problem I have is that the flywheel goes on but the two closest holes to the alignment pin are a half hole off. The remaining holes hit good, but all holes were punched at a slight angle. This flywheel must not have ever been mounted from the paint looking original and not once been hit by a starter, and no bolt marks. I can easily elongate the holes but I want to know if this is something anyone else has run into. Thanks for reading, any input would be great input!

Had trouble getting onto this site for awhile, can now. In the meantime I carefully slotted the holes and engine is running strong now. The ramblin on was to try to get it across that the flywheel had never been mounted before. Sorry about ramblin. I know your busy so Thanks for Your valuable time. Am still wondering why the holes didn't line up correctly.

You have the wrong flywheel, or didn't orient it correctly. No way would I leave it on the engine because you have taken it out of balance by removing material when you slotted the holes.

Get the right flywheel, egging out the holes will not properly locate the flywheel, and if that comes loose you're in for a world of problems.

First thing ,THANK EVERYONE for helping!!! Wasn't sure what I had for an engine so I did the back yard thing. Now it is running and have done a compression check I know the engine is good and will back up and do it right. All cylinders are between 165 and 180lbs. Certainly not the boat anchor I thought it to be. Again your thoughts are appreciated!
