I'm looking to buy a budget fishfinder for my new (old) first boat. I fish in Puget Sound in Washington State mostly.

In looking at all the choices online, Navman seems like a brand that has a lot of features for a reasonable price. I think it's model 4150 has speed and temperature sensors and it's around 150 bucks US.

I know there are a lot of people from the South half of the planet on this board. Maybe one of you has experience with this brand, as it's made in New Zealand???

Thanks.

I took a look at the NAVMAN website. It does have some interesting features that many models don't have. It may lack on the resolution a bit. As for the feature, how much of that stuff are you going to use? Maybe all of them, maybe none.
I probably would not buy one if customer support is not availble in the USA.

Take a look at the EAGLE 320 for $199.99. It seems to be one to take a look at this year.

Dman

Thanks, guys.

I have been trying to stay under $150 or so, and Navman is the only one I saw with speed and temp for that price. Those are the two features I'm looking for.

Eagle and Humminbird are the other brands that are in that price range (and I guess I could pry open my wallet and go $200 if I HAD to).

Let me know how the HBird works for you.

I do have a bracket and transducers for an old Humminbird on my boat. I can't find a fishfinder for sale these days that fits into this deeply notched bracket, but maybe I can use the old transducers and cables. If the plugs are the same, maybe I can add speed and temp to a cheap new Humminbird...

Hmmm.

Re: Eagle SilverStriker 600plus fishfinder - 2 thumbs up!

Most posts I've read about fishfinders says to stay away from Hummingbird. I also just read a report somewhere on line that said Navman was indeed cheap, but beware of the quality. I'm with the earlier post who suggested the new eagle 320 fish elite. 320x320 pixels, 1500 watts of power and $239 with speed and temp. My last finder was an Eagle Accura 240 and it was great. It sounds like you've set yourself a dollar limit that is too low for the features you want. I have discovered that this is not the best way to shop. Save a little more money and buy better quality than what you are looking at.

I've had a few different Fish finders over the years and I now have a GARMIN 160 which is really great. When you zoom the bottom on most others they automatically split the screen into 2 views. With the garmin you can have full screen zoom (which I prefer) or split.
Navman seem to sell well in Australia, I have only seen them at shows and in shops and I thought that the screen is small.
regards terry

Bass Pro and Cabela's has the Eagle 320 for 199.99.
If price is an issue check out a Lowrance X-47 I think. Seems like a good locator for the price of $119.00.

I saw bass pro also has an x-61 for $159.00.
I have not tried any of these but they seem to be good quality and a good price.
D

I've had a Navman chart GPS for about 18 months, and have no complaints.
Try Consumer's Marine, in NJ. They list the Raymarine L365 with temp and speed for $190, and a slew of others.

Captn Mike....I have a Raytheon L365 on the Sea Ray I bought last July and I can't wait to replace it. the resolution is bad (128x64 pixels I believe), the screen is tiny....IMHO it is an overpriced piece of junk...The eagle Accura 240 I had was way better and I'm sure the new Eagle Fishmark 320 is a much better investment than the L359 ray.

That's good to know; there are other Raytheon complaints on these boards.
I wish my Navman screen was bigger, but it's at least easy to read.
I use a Lowrance X65 fish finder, and it works great, so I can endorse that brand, too.

Sea Lemon
I've been using hummingbirds for years, along with a couple of Eagle's thrown in there and I have never had any problem with them other than an occasional fog up on the screen after leaving it on the boat all night. But, it is my understanding that they are succeptible to salt water enviroments. So if that's going to be your area of use, I would probably choose a different unit. My $02 worth.

I have a Navman 5500 plotter and I think it is superb for the money. Friends use the fishfinders and say good things about them. I think they are underpriced at the moment, when they get a market and reputation the price will rise to match the more well known brands.

Thanks for all the feedback. I made a decision. I was still hoping to find speed and temp for $150 or less, and I found it. Boatersworld.com has an Eagle Silverstriker 600plus with speed and temp sensor for $130. If I'm not mistaken, Eagle is Lowrance's low-end brand, so I see it as a decent brand.

I'll let you know how it works. I think the display is the weak point - 160x160 pixels, but a 5" diagonal screen. So it's a decent size screen, but big dots/low resolution. I can live with that for the features, including backlit LCD display, battery voltage reading, etc.

Re: Eagle SilverStriker 600plus fishfinder - 2 thumbs up!

Update on my new fishfinder:

I got it quick, about four days from internet order to box on my porch. Installed it and it works great. Fished with it on Sunday, and no complaints. Turned off the fish id (icons) so it will mark bait, and it worked great. Saw a ton of bait balls, and ended up reeling in blackmouth salmon almost every time I reeled the line up. No keepers, but still fun action.

The display is better than expected, big screen and decent resolution. Some cool features I didn't expect, like voltage meter (so I know the battery is charging), miles traveled log, very adjustable settings, etc.

I sent in the coupon for the free speed/temp sensor immediately when I got it, and expected to wait six weeks like it said. A week later it's on my porch. The speed sensor looks a little cheesy - it's a little paddlewheel that mounts right at the bottom of the transom. It seems like if it gets any corrosion on it at all it won't spin freely or read correctly, but it seems to work well initially anyway. I guess I was thinking the finder itself could interpret bottom echoes and tell me how fast I'm going.

I guess the plus of the paddlewheel is it will tell me water speed instead of speed over ground, which is actually more important for fishing. If I troll with the tide in a 6 knot current, I can know that I am going 2 knots faster than the current, instead of 8 knots over ground. So that's better info than speed over ground, whether from the fishfinder or a gps.

Bottom line: I'm very pleased. I think it's a great value, and I'd recommend it to anybody who asked me. That's the Eagle Silver Striker 600 plus, available only from Boaters World. $130. Joe Bob says "check it out".

I'm gonna sell my Hummbird shortly.. I still have the box and there isn't a mark on it..

but for a replacement, I want something with more power.. more features and even better, a HUGE hi res screen..

I'm sick of the low res on the hummingbird and the way it drops out over 10-15 knots...

The dumb thing is, I am in the computer industry, and I know for a fact that hi res color TFT screens are at an all time low price.. but you can't tell from looking at fishfinder pricing..

Its nuts.. they seem to assume fishermen wouldn't know any better..

I am toying with programming an interface between my Laptop and fishfinder one day.. so I will get a full 1024x768 color display. I'll probably have to significantly modify the fish finder to do it.. but it might make an interesting project.

regards

Frank
