E6RCUD 1987 Evinrude 6hp won't start

This engine has started first pull and run great for years. Yesterday I shut it down to fish and can't get it to start back up. A little mist of fuel in a cylinder and start right up and runs for a few seconds. Could my problem be the fuel pump? Is there a way to test it before I spring for a new one? Any other ideas where to focus my attention?

If it starts by squirting fuel into the carb, you have a carb or pump problem. You can try pumping the primer bulb and keeping it firm and see if it helps, pumping the bulb will bypass the pump. Remove the fuel line from the pump to the carb at the carb, pump the bulb, are you getting good fuel flow, if so you will probably have to pull the carb and overhaul.

New carb kit. It started right up but she won't run at slow speed. I set the needle valve at 1.5 off seat, but don't know if that is the right starting point. At any speed the RPM's are erratic. I did confirm that pumping the primer had not affect. You have gotten me a long ways. I think it just needs some fine tuning. Any more guidance? Any tips on how to easily get to the idle screw while the carb is installed - the lower engine cover is in the way?

Look at the site below, the low speed needle is #15, it should be easy to get to.
You arn't talking about #24 are you, that is the high speed jet and should be turned all the way in snug.

Yep, I am talking about #15 (#24 is nice and snug and hidden away). There is only about 2" between it and the lower engine cover. I can put a straight driver bit in a small ratchet - just a pain. I backed #15 needle valve at 1.5 turns off seat.

I don't have a manual in front of me but on some of those plastic top carbs needed 2 1/2 turns out. Does adjusting the low speed have any effect at all on the idle?
