I will very interested in a 50 or 60 HP E-tec IF the fuel consumption between 4500 rpm and WOT is comparable to a late model 4 stroke. Does anyone have any real hard data on this or know where I can get it?

Havent seen much test data on the E-tecs yet , but tests of larger DI engines shows comparable fuel consumption figures compared to the 4-strokes.

link to test on yamaha web site

Re: E-tec fuel consumption vs. 4 strokes at WOT

Here are factory results with a 50 E-TEC on a 21' pontoon boat. They had a lot of 40, 75, and 90 E-TEC tests, but only this 50hp one. Less than 5 gph at 5500 rpm.

RPM MPH GPH MPG RANGE
850 2.3 0.12 18.8 507
1000 3.0 0.16 18.4 496
1500 4.3 0.27 15.8 426
2000 5.4 0.42 12.7 344
2500 7.3 0.78 9.3 252
3000 8.9 1.33 6.7 180
3500 12.0 1.92 6.2 169
4000 14.3 2.45 5.8 157
4500 16.6 3.08 5.4 145
5000 19.2 3.73 5.1 139
5500 21.1 4.96 4.3 115

I didn't find a 50 4-stroke test, but there is a 60hp Johnson (Suzuki) 4-stroke on a 22' pontoon. It was 1mph slower and used 5.86 gph at WOT. It used 3gph at 4000rpm compared to 2.45gph for the 50 E-TEC.

Seahorse: Thank you, this is good stuff. For this application, which is similar to mine, I conclude that fuel consumption may not be a sufficient reason to go for a 4 stroke and all its complexity. I will look for more 4 stroke information.

Is the source of these factory results available so I could look at the 40HP and other details.

If displacement is the same, at WOT it'll take very close to the same amount of gas to produce the same horsepower. Doesn't matter if it's 2-stroke, 4-stroke, EFI, DFI, carb. But different brands have different displacements and that's where you'll see differences. At less than WOT, the differences broaden widely.

Go to the Evinrude web site and click on the picture of the E-TEC motor. When the animation finishes, click on "Durability,Quality,Reliabilty" Then when that screen comes up, there's a "performance reports" link in the lower right corner of the screen which will take you to ten reports they put together. All of them list data like sea horse provided.

-John

WOT for 50hp (miles per gallon)
E-Tec: 6.9
Yamaha 50 4-S: 8.8
Merc 50 4-S: 7.1

At 3000 rpm:
E-Tec: 7.9
Yamaha 50 4-S: 5.7
Merc 50 4-S: 7.3

At 1000 rpm:
E-Tec: 26.6
Yamaha 50 4-S: 10.8
Merc 50 4-S: 12.9

At Idle:
E-Tec: 39.9
Yamaha 50 4-S: 11.9
Merc 50 4-S: 11.6

This is hard data from Bombardier. The E-Tec is MUCH better overall. Sorry 4-Stroke lovers.
