This may have been brought up already but I missed it, I see the E-TEC evinrude is available as small as 25 hp, was just wondering is it possible to mod the E-tec line to revert back to a standard old style 2 stroke motor? I would think if it can be done someone will surly try sooner or later. again just wondering if it's even possible.

Yes, but you might probably need some parts, at least carb(s) and head and new ignition system. It is from beginning a 2-stroke.

The etec is a high tech direct injection two cycle motor. Why would anyone want to convert it to a std 2 cycle motor?

If you wanted to do it, I would think you would need to mod the crankcase to receive carbs, rig or modify the fuel pump to lower it's presure, mod the fuel system and close up the direct injection ports.

Agreed...

This would be like buying a new, or late model car, ripping the fuel injection off and putting on a carburetor.

Converting an Etec to a carb just doesn't make sense. There are plenty of good used carbed 2 strokes floating around for a quarter of the price or less than a new Etec.

Re: E-tec conversion to standard 2 stroke???

like the good old days when people wanted to remove the pick-ups and go back to points. if the electric choke ever played up they wanted the old cable type installed. "new stuff never works". modern fuel injection is simple and if its possible for the control unit to get the motor to run it will bypass its own sensors and make it run (thats when you get the check light on). im sure someone will swap out the power head on a e-tec and im sure they will be happy as it gives them piece of mind that they might be able to fix it when it breaks down on the lake. same as im sure that some people carry enoght spares to practicaly do a full rebuild while out on the water its just human nature.

I doubt anyone out there has tried but maybe I missed the point of the question. Why would anyone buy a top shelf technology at top dollar just to hack together a motor that wouldn't be as effective as one that was built to be a "standard old" 2 stroke? I'd think if anyone wasn't happy with their e-tec they'd just sell it and buy several older motors in its place.

What would be the advantage of reverting back to a carbed setup? From what I read...Etecs are strong runners, and sip oil/gas.

Are you having problems with your motor?

I'm sure it's possible, but like others have said -- for the price of the parts needed to do this you could probably buy a used 2-stroke and leave the e-tec alone....

It's also possible to pick up a new Bayliner Cuddy ,tear out the cabin and convert it into a bass boat....I just don't know anybody who would do such a thing.

Would you get rid of your troublesome electric starter on your car and put a crank in the front of the engine like the Ford Model T had?

Re: E-tec conversion to standard 2 stroke???

I guess I need to splain a bit more' I don't own a e-tec in fact I have never even seen one, (would like to tho) I would never think of trying to convert one, As I will never own one, I currently have over 30+ vintage top notch running outboards. I was asked by a fellow the other day if you could still buy a new 2 stroke outboard I said yes the e-tec. He then said he had heard bad things about the e-tec and asked if it was possible to make one of thos e-tec's a regular 2 stroke,,and because I TRULY don't know I thought I would ask... Simpleton I am indeed, if I don't know something I ask those who DO. (most) of the time this is an effective method BUT NOT ALWAYS.

seahorse5 If I were on the lake and my troublesome electric starter failed, I would use my pull start indeed, Hey but to each his own.
