I am looking to get a little help from some of you guys that are more knowledgeable when it comes to outboards than I am.

I have been looking at getting a new 50 hp motor for a while now. At first I was looking at getting a 4 stroke, but the more and more I have read on the e-tec motors the better they look.

It seems to me that the biggest reason that everybody is shying away from these new motors is that they are new, and haven't had a chance to stand the test of time to prove they can do all the things that Bombardier is hyping them to be.

My question is, if reliability is a concern why doesn't anybody talk about this special 7yr warranty that is being offered right now?

This will be my 1st brand new outboard so I haven't every had a motor that was covered with a warranty. I was just wondering if there are things that would not be covered with this warranty they are offering that should cause concern?

here is a link to the warranty, just click on the 7yr protection or cash back thing then on the next page click on promotion faq's.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

Any input you guys could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!!

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

This is the 2nd year of production for the E-TEC engines and they have proven reliable. In 3 more months they will be starting their 3rd year of production.

If there were problems with the E-TECs, you would have read all kinds of things on the Internet for the last 2 years.

The 7 year warranty is a big selling point and there is a waiting list for new motors at the moment. Even last year, in their first year of production, Bombardier exceeded their sales forcasts and had to produce more E-TEC outboards than they figured.

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

I've driven that 29' Angler with the Yamaha and Evinrude on the back, and it performs just like it is shown in the infomercial.

What they didn't show was that we lowered the Yamaha back in the water, left it turned off, and the Evinrude planed the boat by itself. Now it took a while to get on plane with that extra drag from the Yamaha in the water, but the Evinrude did it.

I got a chance to see the next commerical that is going after 4-Strokes. If you liked the bass boat one you will love their new one!!!

Walleye,
My understanding is that E-Tecs have had the fewest number of warranty issues in the first 2 years of any engine ever produced by Evinrude even going back to the OMC days. You can absolutely trust this engine. Like seahorse said if there were any problems at all it would be blown up all over the internet and spread rabid by Merc and Yamaha. There is NOTHING to worry about.

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

I just bought a 16' Carolina Skiff with a 2004 50hp E-tec. Yesterday was the first time I had the chance to run it. I do have some questions for you experienced fellows:

Is the motor pre-programmed for the Evinrude XD100 oil, or do I have to have the shop do that for me?

Any prop recommendations? It came with a 13.75" X 15 pitch AL prop. I think the diameter is WAY too big. My 19' Stratos 375V witha 150hp Johnson has a 13.5" diameter prop. Somethings not right there.

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

hey poolecw I am also curious to hear about these things you mention.

have you ever ran a 4-stroke 50hp? just curious to hear what somebody who has actually ran the 2 has for an opinion of comparison. Since nobody in my area that I know has an e-tec I have never seen one run. How do the 2 compare as far as sound? Evinrude is saying they are as quiet if not more quiet than the 4-strokes, is this true?

I haven't heard many 4 strokes run, but I can tell you that the Etec is really quiet. Its a lot quieter than my Cousin's new 40hp Tohatsu (3 cyl). Its also a lot quieter than my buddy's new 25hp Johnson (2 cyl).

I know I'm going to like the motor. There's a lot of engineering behind it. I just need to get the right prop on it.

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

I have a 50 e-tec. Tiller model. It is very quiet. My brother has a 80 hp yammy 4 stroke. His is also very quiet. Both of these are excellent motors. My e-tec is great. It has a couple of minor problems, though (inconveniences, more than anything). The engine is a 2 cyl. so it vibrates a little at idle speed. Also the throttle grip on the tiller handle is a little sloppy. Otherwise it's excellent. On these motors, you can dial down the RPM. Mine is set at 600 and i can troll a fairly small boat down to 0.9mph consistently.

Nice motors--but so are the four strokes.

Bill

Re: E-tec 7yr extended warranty!!!!!!

pool, it is set up from the factory to run regular TCW-3. Your dealer will need to make a quick change in the settings using his computer to set it up for XD-100. I highly recommend this as it will give you much better oil economy.

The reason you have a larger diameter prop is the gearcase is much bigger (same as V-4's). Run the engine and find out with your wide-open RPM is. Then check you owners manual to make sure it is in line.
