I have a 1989 evenrude 15 (E15RCEC) last year I had a local shop instal an electric starter. Worked great until this morning. Good battery (jumped from my truck to make sure). The starter gear won’t connect engage with the flywheel.. the starter seems to be working. The starter gear just won’t go up far enough to mesh with the flywheel. Any suggestion.

Weak battery. LOOSE CONNECTION at starter ? Or a very dry set of sliding gears on the starter motor. Check the voltage on MOTOR terminals while cranking.

Make sure that the Bendix pinion assembly can be wound up the starter motor shaft quite freely by hand until it engages with the flywheel.

What's your battery voltage at the battery, at the solenoid and finally at the starter while cranking. Post numbers and we will tell you were your problems ly.
