Dying going into gear 1970 1150 Inline 6

I finally have my powerhead back and installed. New fuel pump membranes, rebuilt carbs, new rings, etc. Its running at idle very well, but going into gear it dies. The idle adjustment screws on the carbs are at the recommended 1-3/4 turns out from lightly seated. I'm running premixed fuel at 25:1 for the break-in period. My timing at ilde is correct at 5-7 deg BTC (this is correct for this year; I know its different for later years).

I'm looking for suggestions. It sounds like a fuel issue-like its just not getting enough to keep the motor going when going into gear. It will die even if I put it into gear and then give it trottle immediately.

I've been through Clams Casino's post about how to set the timing, sync the carbs, etc. It assumes that the motor doesn't die going into gear, which is my problem.

Any thoughts, suggestion etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Still too lean on the idle mixture.

While 25 to 1 is a good break in mix, the oil displaces more gas to make the idle mixture too lean.

Back out the idle screws another 1/4 turn and try again. Finish adjustment once running on the water.

Once the engine is broken in and you return to a 'Normal' fuel/oil mix you will need to readjust the idle mixture.
