DVD Players?

Some time ago there was a thread about some component, in a DVD player, that was prone to burning out when the unit was left plugged in, and in the warmed up standby mode. (otherwise off)

Is this still the case with newer DVD players?

I have a cheapy Mintek DVD player that I had during that forum discussion. It has been used very little but standing by for all this time. The Mrs went to use it the other day, and it just sat in the 'loading' state for some time then went to 'no disc installed'. I have verified that the DVD disc is good in another machine and I have tried a couple of different DVDs in this Mintek unit. All with the same results.

I have no intention of trying to fix this one but wondered what to expect for newer units. I also have a later model Sony BluRay DVD player (2-3 y/o) that stays plugged in all the time but it has no standby light on it that I am aware of. It may also have an option, in the setup, to disengage the 'standby' mode. Not sure, though.

Re: DVD Players?

I have never had a DVD player die on me. We are really bad about turing them off....

Re: DVD Players?

The only time I had a DVD machine go out was a burner and we used it so much it wore out, but I have 2 blu ray players now and they are both a couple of years old and never have had a problem, as cheap as some of the new ones are, I would just pick up another blu ray as you can still play your DVD's in them and they upscale to DVD which on some of the older DVD it is really a noticeable better picture.
