Coast Guard auxiliary down here refer to them simply as a "throwing device."

Throwable flotation device here.

I use a cushion with a 50' rope attached.
Good idea to have the rope, unless you are sure you will hit the man overboard with your first throw, in a panic, with the wind blowing.

Plus, when I go to Canada, they require a rope with float attached.

And, I always have an extra rope on board, just incase I need it for something.

Roscoe wrote..."I use a cushion with a 50' rope attached.
Good idea to have the rope, unless you are sure you will hit the man overboard with your first throw, in a panic, with the wind blowing."

Coast Guard in this area said that you SHOULD NOT have a rope tide to it and here is why. The idea is NOT to throw the ring as a retreval device, but as a first responce to a man overboard. If thrown without a rope it will drift with the current at aprox. the same speed as the person in the water. You should throw it near the person and let them swim or grab onto it to help keep them a float until you can turn your vessel around and pick them up.
If the ring is on a rope and you throw it, the person could drift away before you have the chance to retreive the ring and re-deployee it>>>OR the rope could snag onto something and not drift with the person in the water.

It should just be thrown the way it is designed! There are other devices such as a throw line & bag system that are used to retrieve someone AFTER they have a flotation device to keep there head above water!
