Dumb Question of the Day

Just bought a used 19'1979 Chapparrall bowrider with 120hp I/0 (I-drive). I pulled the lower unit to replace bad impeller. Noticed that the bottom oil seal on the upper unit (where the drive gear spline goes into the upper unit)was bad. First Question..do I have to pull out upper unit driven gear assembly (and have to buy the two mercruiser shimming tools) just to replace that one bottom oil seal OR can I replace that seal from the bottom since it is somewhat flexible? Question2...is this boat underpowered? Thanks in advance to everyone for your advice.

Sort of low on power but will work ok..If you ever have to change out motors..Install the 140hp 3.0

Are you talking item #10???

Re: Dumb Question of the Day

Thanks for getting back to me Trent. According to your diagram; I believe it is item #9. I knew something was wrong when I pulled the lower unit because gear oil came out of the upper unit. I pulled the upper unit and turned it upside down and saw that the round o-shaped spring retainer that keeps the oil ring shape was bent. (I guess I tagged the seal with the spring detent on the top of the drive spline on the way out when I dropped the lower unit..... Does that whole assembly have to be removed just to replace that lower seal or can you just replace it from the bottom?
