Ducks & Carp?

I witnessed an amazing sight on the weekend, my daughter was feeding ducks (stale bread) of the swimplatform and suddenly half a dozen carp came up to join the party.

About ten ducks and 6 carp were fighting for the lions share of the spoils - ducks flapping at the fish and fish nipping the ducks feet - unbelievable. Most of the carp were about 24", it wasn't like they were coming up and darting off again, they were simply 'treading water' so to speak - sucking in the bread.

I've got a 20 second movie of it but can't work out how to post it.

Aldo

At Lynn Creek Marina at Joe pool lake you can buy fish food and feed the carp. An area of probally 100 sq. foot just boils with so many carp. The kids have a blast.

If there were no ducks, I'd use treated feed to KILL the carp...

Yep, they are a pest here also, fishermen (& fisherwomen)are supposed to bury them well away from the edge of the bank so that eggs don't hatch.

I've seen them surface feeding many times, just thought it was amazing the way the ducks and fish interacted.

Prop's still visible.

Aldo

Can you shoo away the ducks and dynamite them? Aren't carp a listed noxious creature?

Yes, noxious. Not allowed to keep or put back. Have to bury or burn. The fingerlings are prized as bait - that how they spread - people don't care. They are mud scavengers and will muddy up an area causing local species to leave an area and eventually die off (its a big problem in Eildon) but fisheries are restocking with trout and cod in ever increasing numbers to try and overwelm the carp. They can't poison because the lake is home to many species and its an aquatic playground for people. So far: Carp 1, everything else 0 although last winter I bagged some decent rainbows - go figure.

Aldo

Oldtyme, I took the footage with my digital stills camera, 1 x 10 sec movie (2.64 mb) and 1 x 2 minute movie (36 mb). Both movies are fragmented and jumpy (my brilliant camera skills at work again  ).

I'm willing to e-mail to you - are you sure you want to proceed?

I know I can extract still images from the movies but I've lost my manual and can't quite seem to work out how to do it just yet - still trying.

Aldo

When we were kids, we would sit on the dock, place kernels of corn between our toes, and dangle out feet in the water. The carp would come up and suck the corn from our toes.

These carp were originally imported to the US from Europe, for their food value. They taste best if harvested from small springfed ponds and cleaned a special way. They should be bled out. Then take care not to cut into the lateral line, but remove it. Tastes best when cured and smoked. I don't buy them, but they are sold at many local grocery stores.

They are great fun to catch, but the ones that live in a river can be as strong as an ox, so use heavy gear.

Hey!!! I'm from southern Indiana. How did you know about the problem with carp? And mother-in-laws. One stinks and takes over your fishing time and place. The other is a fish.

When we kids we used to tie a crust of bread on a piece of twine and throw it in the water. The carp would suck it up and we would pull back on the twine.
Pound for pound, carp is probably the hardest fighting fish in the water.

Re: Ducks & Carp?

why does carp bleed so much? I pull one up on the dock once and it look like I just slaughtered a pig after removing the hook.
