Dual Batteries... Do you need to use the same batteries?

Hello,

I have a 1986 Formula 206 with a Merc 260/Alpha One. It's currently setup with dual batteries, both of which need replacing. I was wondering is it necessary to use the same batteries or can they be different? I already have one new deep cycle marine battery but I can get a huge discount on another deep cycle of a different make. Thanks in advance for the help.

No, they do not have to be the same make.

Ayuh,... Actually, you should use yer deep-cycle for the electronics, 'n get a Starting battery for startin' the motor...
No problem with different batteries, when used with a battery switch...

Thanks for the help. I'll get a starting battery for the motor. So just to be clear, I should switch to the starting battery for starting and use the deep cycle when I am just running electronics? Can I swith to the "both" setting when the motor is running so I can charge both?

Yes.

Yes.

A lot of literature indicates not to switch the battery selector switch while the engine is running. I always found it easiest to start the engines on 'both', run to where you wnat to be, shut the engine off and then turn the switch to '2' (if that's your deep cycle) to run electronics, trolling motor, lights, whatever. When you're ready to leave, switch back to 'both', start the engine and go home.
