Hey all

I just rebuilt the carbs on my 1976 70 HP Johnson. As part of the re-install I replaced the carburetor to manifold gaskets (came in the kit), as well as the gasket from the airbox to the carbs, and the air box cover to the air box. I installed these gaskets dry i.e. with no gasket sealer stuff on them. Is this the way its supposed to be done? I wasn't quite sure, but figured its better to install them dry in case I need to take the whole airbox assembly off again for some other adjustment.

Yes! It is not recommended to use sealers on these gaskets because excessive sealant can come loose and lodge in the carbs.

Excellent point! I didn't think of that, but it makes perfect sense. Now that I think of it, the previous owner had used a gasket sealer on the airbox cover, and who knows if any of that stuff had made its way into the carbs. Thanks!

Most people don't even use the airbox gaskets. Worst that can happen is that it can . . .

. . . leak air.
