This sounds very serious. Six healthy young men taking part in a drugs trial of a new anti-inflammatory drugs are in an intensive care unit with two listed as "critically ill".

BBC are reporting the full story here.

Hope they pull through and sympathies must be with the families and friends at the moment.

I can understand people taking part in a study that may help their own condition that other treaments have not worked for, but to just go be a lab rat for a couple bucks...

For this bad of a reaction, were there no animals that had beeen tested on before, or did peta convince them it's better to kill humans?

Those 2 that took plecebo.... they should go buy a lottery ticket.

good point... if these were peta people that volunteered for the testing, then I'm all for it.

There are quite a few Peta people who do volunteer for this sort of stuff.

Sad story....Taking part in a drug study when you are not afflicted with what the drug is trying to cure is obviously not the brightest move....
Animal testing is not always 100% effective either.....
My ex was in the drug reasearch biz....
There are some real horror stories out there....JK

Re: Drugs trial goes horribly wrong

i don't know what the rules are about drug testing overseas but the FDA has very stringent rules here. drugs are thoroughly evaluated before ever getting close to a person. from what i can remember, human trials are phase 3 of the testing process. obviously, the first 2 phases should eliminate any questions about human use. that does not mean there can't be problems with dosages or manufacturing.

i participated in some studies when i was in college, it paid great.

as stupid as you say it may be, healthy people are tested before sick people get it. so, anyone needing medication needed someone healthy to test it first. i guess we could test stuff on the military like the good old days.
