Mercruiser Bravo 1 outdrive (only a couple years old) on a custom 454

First time in 20+ years of owning boats, I forgot to put up my outdrive before pulling out of the water. Unfortunately, I pulled up a few feet, then backed down again to get the boat perfectly centered on the trailer, then up 10 feet before I noticed (expletive!) Looked like I just scraped the skeg, but a week later when I put her back in the water for the first time since....

My 'soon to be unimpressed' better-half noticed the boat steaming out the back. Then the temperature shot way up after just a couple minutes warming up in neutral. I shut it down at the sound of the buzzer and pulled it out. She (the boat) normally runs very cool, even when running hard.

Anyone have ideas on what I could have damaged to cause this? Recommended next steps?

I'm reading some forums saying that Bravo 1's don't have impellers in the outdrive?

While I hope it isn't serious, it "walks like a duck and quacks like a duck" right now.

There isn't a pump in the Bravo drives, and with only minor skeg damage, my guess is it's just a coincidence you have an overheat at this time. The impeller should be the first thing you check with a boat overheating.
When was the last time it was replaced? and what year is the engine?

Thanks.

The boat is a 96 but new to me this season, so I don't know when the impeller was changed last. The engine was custom built a few years ago, but I'm suspicious they put the old water pump on the new long block. I'll check the impeller this week and let you know what I find. Thanks again.

impellers should be serviced every 2 years, or 200 hours. whichever comes first. if you don't know, then definitely change it. try back flushing the pickup as well

did you ever discover the issue here? I did the same thing you did...then I overheated two weeks later when I put it back in.

I already replaced the pump with a brand new to discover my old one was perfectly fine....same thing with the thermostat.

The original poster has 2 posts since he has been hear. Both in this 2 year old thread. If you have a question, ask it, in a new thread, not at the end of a 2 year old thread.
