I've damaged the skeg on my Johnson 140 1988 outboard and need to fit a new aluminium plate. How do I drop the gearbox. I've undone the bolts at the bottom but think I need to disconnect the drive shaft..............How do I do this ????

Howdy, Dragon. I don't think you need to drop the lower end to fix your skeg. Skeggard is a bolt-on, Stainless Steel sleeve that restores and protects what is left of your skeg. You need at least 1.5 to 2" of the original skeg.

As to dropping your L.E., I am not expert, but I think all you need to disconnect is the bolts. There is a locating pin that sometimes requires a little persuasion to release. The spline on the driveshaft and the shift rod may also want to stick. If you don't need to, don't.

Good luck.
JB

That's right - don't if you don't have to but in case you do the pin is directly under the carbs. The easiest thing to do is pop the lower pans off and it's very esy to get to.

Good luck!
