I just recently bought a 78 Mercury 50 HP motor from a neighbor who hadn't run it for 20 years. While searching the web, I found out the first thing to do before taking it out on the water was to change the impellar. I don't have a manual, as I am going to put it on a Gregor and probably sell it when it is running. If I decide to keep it, I'll buy a manual. I got it to run briefly, but it didn't pump water. Question is how do I get that lower unit to come off? I found two bolts on opposite sides of each other in the front with a third underneath in the rear. Do I keep it in gear, forward, reverse or leave it in neutral? Is there something that needs disconnecting on top before it will drop down? Changed one on an older Evinrude that required the lower unit dropped, but never a Mercury. Motor is like new. Have new plugs, carbs are clean, etc.
Should I buy a waterpump kit, or just an impellar? Thanks very much for anyone willing to help out. Tried searching the posts, but didn't find much pertaining to my particular model that I could use.
