DARPA christens its anti-submarine drone ship 'Sea Hunter'

DARPA's Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) has a brand new and less tongue twisty name: Sea Hunter. The agency made the announcement at the drone ship's christening in Portland, following a series of speed tests conducted these past few days. Now that DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar is done smashing a bottle over its bow, it's ready to begin a battery of tests to be held within the next two years. The military has to make sure the 132-foot self-driving ship can evade other marine vessels using its radar and cameras, among other things, before it can officially deploy it.

Sea Hunter has the capability to hunt stealthy foreign submarines -- China's and Russia's navies both have big submarine fleets -- and follow them for two to three months at a time. Deputy US Defense Secretary Robert Work clarified to Reuters during the event, though, that the drone doesn't have weapons. If the military decides equip it with any, Work said the decision to use them would be made by human personnel. We're guessing they'd be controlled remotely, since the ship wasn't designed to house a crew on board. The ship is slated to start its open-ocean tests this summer off the California coast.

If the pilot house was removed, she would look like a sub with outriggers.

I guess the pilot house is for robots. :noidea:

I was looking over some of the SpaceX stuff today after the flight. I didn't realize they were landing on drone ships. I've not been paying attention to marine drones apparently.

Were you humming some catchy chords and thinking about the Bermuda Triangle, Kogs.

First SpaceX and before you know it, Amazon will be dropping packages at the wrong house because they use Google maps. :D

Heard a news report yesterday - Woman's house mistakenly demolished because contractor used Google maps to find the location.

He was supposed to be one block over.

Yeah - Kinda stupid to use a Google map instead of physically verifying the address.

Soon there will be nothing for humans to do. Not the kind of world I want to live in. Star trek showed a lot of humans on ships and ONE robot called Data. Wishful thinking from a human standpoint

Data was not a robot, he was an android. If he had his emotion chip activated he would be quite offended. ....

Yea that is just human ego. Data had to have a human side to him. Most Universe travelers will most likely be full robots IMO. Robots are already taking over many jobs humans used to to. Well robots and computers. Now owners of Fast food places are talking about making them fully automated to cut out the human work force expense. Drones are going to make Amazon deliveries. Fight wars etc etc. Drone boats to protect fleets are being tested. Not a bright future for the kids of today

All that technology and one good strong solar flare could send us back to the 1800,s A .couple of well placed emp bombs(nukes) would wipe out 90 percent or more of all electronic devices in North America.
