When I dropped the LU of my '87 6-HP Evinrude to change the impeller, the driveshaft came out of the pinion gear in the gear box and not the powerhead. I've clamped a vise grip on the shaft and hit it with a hammer but no luck.

Is heat the next option? Do I use a torch through the backside once I buy a thin-wall socket to remove the 2 bolts in that cover?

Here's the cover I'm talking about. Thanks!!!!!!!

the shaft is rusted to the crank shaft. turn the motor upside down, put a block of wood on the end of the drive shaft. smack it a couple of good raps with a hammer. if it does not break free, use some penetrating oil and leave upside down. presently you can hang the motor by the drive shaft, and hopefully the weight of the power head will work with you.

on reassembly don't forget the gasket to keep the water out of there.

PB Blaster or Deep creep would be a good thing to try.Like TD said, soak it a day or so and smack it with a hammer.
