I got a Volvo Penta 5.7l I/O, no ehaust shutters. This was a re-power 100 hours ago. I have a little vibration at 900 rpm, mechanic says its nothing, engine settling in(?). Recently I get a rythmic tap in the drive shaft are between the engine and the outdrive, most noticeable atr idle. Sometimes louder than others. Has anyone ever dealt with this situation and know where its going? Is it safe to continue running or should I haul out. Thanks in advance.

Re: Driveshaft noise

if the engine settles in its out of alignment.
I would haul it for inspection.
was the repower a complete package or just an engine?
some model numbers would be nice as well.
what model is the drive and which 5.7 did you get?

Re: Driveshaft noise

Like rodbolt stated, if it settles, it's out of alignmnent.
If you don't check the alignment, and it did settle (more on that later) then you will probably loose a coupler in a very short time. Along with ujoints, gimbal bearing, and input shaft.
The only reasons for it to "Settle" is the stringers or transom being rotten, or the motor mount bolts were never tightened and they have moved.
The settling in statement sounds like a cop out to keep from having to deal with it.
Don't wait, get it checked now. The longer you wait, the more expensive the repair.
