just noticed a whining noise coming from my alpha 1. we recently replaced the gimbal bearing and u joints. So i pulled the cap off the top of the outdrive and the bearing had some corrosion on it. 2 questions. this boat sat up for about 2 years and since that bearing does not sit in gear oil like the others is it common for this to be the only bearing that goes bad. also can i pull and replace just that bearing with out takin the whole dang thing apart.

Re: driven shaft bearing

When the ujoints are replaced, that drive gear assembly has to be disassembled and reassembled with the proper rolling torque.Did that happen?

Re: driven shaft bearing

Hondon, I did not retorque that whole assembly, both u joints came out without having to dissasemble the drive assembly, why retorque when nothing was loosened, i did install the larger heavy duty u joints does that change the relationship/balance in the assembly?

I would be interested in knowing how you changed that rear cross bearing, without removeing the bearing and drive gear assembly from the drive. Are you sure you've got a Mercruiser?

yeah, its a 1988 serial# OC419468. i just turned the bearing in between the teeth of the spanner nut and they just barely! slipped by. I had to replace the yoke shaft so i went ahead and changed both cross bearings. Does the fact that i could slip them by mean something is out of whack inside?

I've never had to remove the yoke from the bearings to remove the rear U joint. In fact, the book shows using a hand press (looks like a big C clamp) to push them out and in with the yoke still on the drive.

Re: driven shaft bearing

concerning that bearing on the upper driven shaft can i just pop that sucker off and replace it as clymer seems to imply or must i take shaft assembly, and driven gear out and go thru the shimming ,torqueing, tool buying process or just stick old shims in with new bearing and new race?
