Hi

After remove the stern drive unit SX-M, from year 1999, in order to lubricate the U-joint and inspection of the Bellows I detect this lack of material.
It is normal or is a real lack of material. If so what is the corrective action?

Its not normal. Looks like someone used a screw driver at some point to pry off the drive. It also doesn't hurt anything so no worries if you leave it that way.

It is a drain and perfectly normal. If water got trapped there it might freeze and crack things.
Picture of mine, now rest easy.

I have the same drain on the starboard side of the drive.
But this one is on the Port Side. I also think that someone used a screw driver to pry off the drive.
So is ok, and it is impossible to go water inside the drive through this damage?

The actual drain being referred to is indeed on the other side - but the bottom line is that water is SUPPOSED to get in there and then drain back out - now you have two holes for it to drain out of....looks like someone did use a screw driver to pry the drive off - not a good idea but its not going to effect anything structurally whatsoever. Your u-joint bellows is what keeps water out of the boat!
Put some marine grease on your studs when you put it all back together to keep the outdrive from seizing on next year.

Ok, but if water get in that ?damage?, that is near de drive shaft, and under water level, how is possible to drain out? Could not affect the drive shaft?

Thanks, Almeida

Water gets in that area around the damage, but does not touch the drive shaft because the drive shaft is inside the black rubber u-joint bellows. When you put the drive back on, it seals against the lip of the bellows (red arrow) and keeps water from getting into the bellows and damaging the drive shaft.
