I need to check my drive unit oil on a alpha one outdrive. The manual says to unscrew The vent screw and if oil comes out then your ok. The only way I can check this is to tilt the out drive up to get to the screw, will this give me the right read on the oil if the drive is tilted, and also is it ok to fill it when it is tilted. The manual says I should check this weekly ???? Thanks for any insight into this question. Enjoy The labor day weekend

Re: Drive unit oil/ Any help I can Get

Some outdrive units have a dipstick and are much easier than a alpha unit to check. It would be very difficult to check an alpha unit while the boat is in the water. The vent screw is barely above the water line and is too easy to get water in the vent hole while checking. The procedure is correct,if no oil comes out the vent hole try adding a little to see if it needs to be topped off.You will have to use a small oil can to squirt some in.Personally I would trailer the boat out of the water and tilt the drive down before I check.
