Happy Boating Season to all-

So my 1992 Celebrity 180 BR with the 4.3LX Mercruiser Alpha Gen 2 growls a little when the drive is in the full up/ when the trailer switch is depressed and the drive is in its fullest possible up position. When I trim the drive down the noise goes immediately away and doesn't make noise in left or right turns. Please tell me this is normal. And I don't rev it at all when its in that position. Lets all have a great, safe boat season.

It's normal and you shouldn't be running it in that position. Very hard on the U-joints.

Thanks Bond-0 and ezmobee

One other question, my engine is Non Vortec would I gain any felt performance by switching to Vortec style heads? Would the factory springs on the Vortec heads be a match for my non balance shaft 1992 cam? I realize I would have to buy the michiganmotorz 4 bbl vortec intake. Would it be a worthwhile endeavor? My motor currently runs perfect. Has a quicksilver 21 pitch prop.

I always wondered about this, because the warning is somewhat amiguous (see pic).
They say don't trim up when "underway", but does having engine running hurt anything. Also, they then mention the gimbal ring supports being an issue, and state 1200 rpm.
I mean which is it?
Why don't they state, "Don't run engine with drive raised past trim limit position"?boat.JPG

My take on the warning is: Do not raise drive unit with the trailer button becouse it does not have a limit when using it in the up position ( You can not tell what position the drive is in while underway) Unless you have a gauge. Thats why you only use the trim button while underway, it will stop when it hits the correct drive angle.
Then when reving above 1200 RPM you are putting alot of stres on the gimble ring supports when the drive is in the full up position.

Just my thoughts!

Yeah, I guess I feel that it's simply a poorly-written warning......or "caution". A caution should be clear/concise.
Additionally, I notice on my Alpha Gen I, that the drive is supported by the gimbal Ring support flanges WELL past the point that the limit switch stops the drive.
Oh well.....
