Hi. We're looking at buying a boat with a Yamaha 200 outboard which needs some repairs. The owner doesn't want to spend the money, so we are going to buy the boat as-is after we get a quote for repairs. Can someone please give me a ball park figure of what it could cost us. The outboard is a 1998 Yamaha 200 with approx 90 hours and the following is the state it's in.

* Drive shaft sheared off at the base of the flywheel.
* Carbs need cleaning at best, rebuild kit at worst.
* Otherwise fine

Also, if we needed to completely get the engine rebuilt, what approximate costs would we be looking at.

I know it's a question that can't be answered exactly, but we are just after a bit of an idea so we know how much to offer the guy.

Cheers

Poddida, I cant answer your question but I want to comment on the hours. Those are low for a 1998. I have put 92 hours on my motor so far this year. SJ.

Average rebuild for a 200 is about 2,500.00. With the problems your has, you may want to add $500.00 to that. Not sure, but believe that the price you pay should be based on the salvage / core value of the unit on the boat. With a good foot, case, prop, cover and carbs, you may get about $650.00 salvage from a good use parts dealer. With that low hours, the prior owner really, really abused that motor.

If you did not learn anything today, you should have stayed in bed.
:rolleyes:

You gotta wonder what made the crank break at the flywheel and what other damage lurks beneath. Also a carb clean is the same as a carb rebuild, you can't do one properly without doing the other (The least of your concerns with this motor).

Agree again with jimd, not sure that one is worth any for the aggravation it will cause.

If you did not learn anything today, you should have stayed bed.

:)

hey cheers for all the info. the whole salvage value is what we were thinking of and will offer a price for what we think the hull is worth. if it turns out we get it for what we offer, and only spend a few grand for a recondistioned motor we may be ok. luckily it's a time share thing, so i wont have to be the burden of the full costs.

Cheers

Good thinking and that way you can't get beat up to bad. I have bought two boats and estimated the motors as having salvage value only when making the deal. One of the motors cost me about $15.00 to get running and I ran it for 15 years. The other had to be rebuilt ($1,500.00) and that was ten years ago. I ran it Friday.
