Drive shaft play

With the LU removed and secured on a bech, is it normal to be able to grasp the drive shaft and be able to move it from side to side easily? In other words, I can grasp it and the top of the shaft moves maybe an inch or so from center, in any direction with little to no effort. This just seems loose to me although I realize once it's secure in the powerhead it probably won't move in this manner.

Re: Drive shaft play

I read one of your other posts, and if you're talking about your 1996 150 HP,it has a two piece drive shaft, and the play is normal.

Also HPF gear oil is the newer generation of Hi Vis.Either will work for your engine.

Yep, normal. Once the water pump is off it'll move quite a lot. If you ever checked the "square" from the adaptor plate surface to the bottom of the mid section you'll understand why it needs some freedom.

Thanks for the responses. Good to know that is normal then. BTW, yes it is a '96 Johnson 150. Pardon me for leaving that out.
