drive shaft / pinion gear removal ?

1996 4 HP Yamaha -- My goal is to replace a broken driveshaft . The lower unit has been removed to expose the drive shaft for replacement . Upon removing the lower section football-shaped gearcase , I can see that the drive shaft will not slide outward because it appears that the driveshaft has a pinion gear machined (??) onto the driveshaft within the football-shaped gearcase unit . What is the method to remove the driveshaft from the pinion gear so that I can subsequently install a new driveshaft . Also , how does the " machined -on " pinion gear get put back onto the driveshaft ? Is this a job for the local machine shop / How much would be reasonable to pay ?

Re: drive shaft / pinion gear removal ?

If the pinion were machined as part of the driveshaft it would be on the new shaft as well. Most pinion gears are pressed on and can be removed by driving the shaft from the bottom end out and through the pinion gear. Some shafts are secured with a snap ring/c-clip. Some used a keyway in the shaft/gear assembly. <br />Once again, this type would be driven out from the bottom, just remove the lower gearcase housing and pull the shaft out first.

Thank you for the feedback . I'll checkout the snap ring C - clip concept . That would be great to remove .
