drive shaft o ring?

OK so i pulled the gearcase off rebuilt the water pump. then noticed that there was an o ring that kind of fit on the drive shaft on top of the water pump, but the new kit i bought did not come with this oring and was not supposed to. but is it needed? and if so how can i be sure of the size so i can buy a new one locally. here is a blow up view of the parts. and it is number 65 on this one. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1977/70773S 1977/GEARCASE-20"TRANSOM/parts.html
I'm not sure if they just did away with it or if they just ***** everyone out of it when they buy the kit. also my manual says to place omc sealant on gearcase and exhaust housing what can i use instead? thank you for the help

It's just a oring... Pick one up at the auto parts store... Yes you need it.. Put some grease on it...

I think the last kit I installed had it but can't be 100% sure... It doesn't go on top of the water pump.. It goes on the top of the drive shaft.. That's justa part breakdown so it doesn't really explain

This is some good stuff and I like to use it on all most everything... Sells at the part house too

OK so i don't wanna sound dumb but size? should i just measure it across the shaft i know it has o/d and i/d so? but again i don't wanna sound dumb, just new. thanks

You know... I really couldn't tell ya..

Just drag the lower with ya down there and take one that fits in the groove

I just took the housing with me and headed down to the local Ace Hardware store, found one that fit, greased it up, put everything back together and have not had a problem with it at all..

Just looked at the link you posted and that is the exact same one I replaced at the local Ace hardware..

OK so i got it in and put back together. here is the video i think its flowing better, but no matter at least i know when it was changed. thank you guys for all the valuable help.

whew got ya a big ol bottle of that stuff.. Good isn't it? You look good to go to me... Seeing you engine run and all that smoke.... LOL reminds me of why I went I/O... Whew... Oh and the fuel mileage.. Carry plenty of brew for that thing... They love the fuel... Another video if some runs would be cool without it running out of juice

lol yeah gonna try and take it out sat. supposed to be bout 70 so that's warm enough for me.

We have had plenty of warm days... Just the water hasn't busted 70 yet.... I still got a few little things to finish on the tub....

yeah and i cant wait for that ether. its one thing to just go cruising but another to actually take a dip. and tube, ski, beach ect...
