I am newly registered here. Thanks to all. I have used this site for about a month and have found your advice very useful.

My question is regarding my water pump repair kit for a johnson 9.9 1982. There is a small rubber o-ring about the same diameter as the drive shaft. I am not sure where this goes. There is a groove at the top of the drive shaft just below the cogs. Does anyone know where it goes on this motor?

Thanks

In the groove below the splines. Make sure to use grease on the splines, but NOT the top end of the driveshaft when reassembling.

Re: Drive shaft o-ring placement?

Good advice but here's a bit more detail. If you put grease on top of the drive shaft, you can hydraulically lock the drive shaft from going in all the way that it should. You won't notice it isn't home until you bolt up the leg and find the water pump is ruined, or at best won't turn due to the fact it is longer than it's supposed to be. I've go an 82 15 and I love that motor. It has been a a friends cabin for the past few years and it's coming home to me next week. I can hardly wait. Here is a link that I consider a must read for all us 9.9 and 15 owners. Hope you enjoy it. Rick.
