the wear pattern looks ok to me, but i'm concered about the rust specks ya can see...pitting? also in the upper pic i'm concerend about the black ring which i think is the start of rust.......think it's servicable?

i'm concered about the blue tint...i'm guessing they got to hot and should be replaced...same with the brg. cup...ya can see the roller imprints + ya can see the start of blue on it too.....the side ya can't see is more blue yet......

IMG_2630.jpg

the other brgs.....inside race looks a little blue too......

the oil seal carrier maybe acceptable, but i'd like to replace the seal. what's the proper way to get it out.....this isn't what i expected to see. i don't see how i can move the depth of the seal as was described to me in the other thread.....i don't think i want to move it anyways...this part for sure i think i should replace..... i did pressure test the drive prior to dissasembly....it help 15 psi, and 5 hg.......

is that too much rust on the brg retainer nut?

IMG_2640.jpg

this is the only part i think for sure is toast....to much rust.....

guess the question in general is are any of these parts serviceable.....my general feeling prior to the question is no. they should all be replaced....but i don't look at brgs too much. so maybe i'm wrong. it'd be nice to be wrong..... if these parts are bad, it's gonna lead to more threads i'd bet......;) thanks folks for bearing (pun inteneded) with me on this long thread....

last pic i hope....sorry....

IMG_2605.jpg

are the two hash marks i see on this gear alignment marks.....they don't look to be from the oem..... the marks are directly across from the 78 that's etched into it too.....don't know what that means either..... they look like they're made with an electric pensil or something......guess i thought if it had hash marks they'd be more machined in type marks..... needless to say, i aint found any mark on the gear still in the drive, but it could be faceing the wrong way..... i tried to turn it with the prop shaft. but didn't succeed......

Ayuh,.........

I don't think things are as Bad as you think Ziggy,........

In picture #1,..... That little bit of discoloration should clean up with a scotch-brite pad,.....Or very fine emery cloth..... I'd rather be able to see the Teeth of the gear.... Clean the rust,+ color off them,+ look for Pitting,...

#2,....That little bit of discoloration should clean up with a scotch-brite pad,.....Or emery cloth..... Clean the rust,+ color off them,+ look for Pitting,...

#3,+ #4.... That's not the Working surface of the bearing,...... You have to look at the face of the inner race for Pitting or chatter marks......
The slight discoloration on the surfaces I see are Fine,+ will clean up......

#5,.... Again,..... Clean it with a scotch-brite pad,... Then, IF you can feel the marks where the rollers were sitting, replace it....(remember, the if the Cup is replaced, the Cone should also be replaced)

#6,.... Same as above,.... Those surfaces are nearly irrevelant,.... It's the Face of the Inner Race that counts......

#7,.... Just drive the seal out with a Punch,+ Hammer,..... Replacement is the opposite operation....

#8,.... Clean it up,.... I see No Problem there......

#9,.... Ayuh,..... That's Junk,...... Unless you can Speedi-Sleeve it,... The Seal Surface is Shot........

#10,.... I can't see any problems at all with that gear.....

Good Luck...........

I agree with Bond-o
scotchbrite it off and feel the bearing races. stains dont worry me as long as my fingernails or a pencil point wont catch on a pit.
minor pitting of a geartooth may be ok in lower horsepower applications.
if you change a bearing or gear then your going to reshimm most of it.
finnish cleaning the parts and inspect them.
I dont use a hammer to change seals but its possible. or you can buy the seal carrier with the seal already installed.
the input yoke is pretty much trashed.

:(

i went and did the deed...bought parts that is.....

thanks for yer input guys. i really didn't want to replace them brgs.........i tried to get the blue off and it won't. so.
my wallet says use what ya got,
what little experience i got says replace.........

talked with my local merc mech today too. he's saying that if there's any question about a brg....for any reason. merc school suggests replacement. blueing is a question. so the credit card's been used....... pretty much everything in the assy. but the gear is on order..... i guess ya sure don't want to get rusty ujoints. so far i bet i'm up into the 7 hundie area for expense. sure do hope the project works out for that kinda bread......

committed myself to shiming it looks like..... dealers willing to let me use their shim tool though. that was nice of them, hope they remember they made the offer when i get to the shiming part.......

on my drive gear, the merc mech thinks the two hash marks on my gear are mateing marks to be engaged with the driven gear, though he didn't know what the 78 was about.

thanks for the help. guessin my next thread will be about shimming.....just a guess......

parts on order...... have a great day.......jim
