Re: Drive shaft assembly removal

Hi Slow
Pull up on the driveshaft to remove it from the gearcase. The driveshaft to pinion taper is a locking taper. If necessary use a puller to break the lock. Use OMC part#390706. This puller clamps around the driveshaft and uses two bolts on each side to supply traction. I would just clamp the driveshaft in the vice and jerk the housing up and down. Maybe use a rawride mallet to tap down on the housing. Of course you must use care and comman sence so you don't break or mar things, use wood blocks in the vice,Etc. After removing the driveshaft, needle bearings of the pinion bearing may fall into cavity of the gearcase. Remove all 19 needles from the gearcase.

Slow.... If you don't have access to the puller that Alcan mentions, try this.

Insert the tip of a large regular slotted screwdriver between the shifter clutch dog and the driveshaft threads.... a screwdriver large enough to take up the play between the dog and driveshaft.

Now, rap the bottom portion of the propshaft upwards with a mallet. That will break the friction lock between the pinion and the driveshaft whereas you can now lift the driveshaft out.

Thanks guys ,Alcan and Joe Reeves,
Don't you guys sleep? Man was I supprised at 7 am when I seen your response's, that's quick!

Everything went well, I had to use the screwdriver trick because it is a 2 piece shaft plus I don't have a puller but anyway it's apart and all cleaned up and ready to go back together as soon as I find that 19th roller...once again THANKS guys and have a nice summer.

Slow Motion
