Hi all.

Last year when I serviced my outdrive I found the round coil spring from the shaft seal in the gimball housing when I was wiping out the old grease. At the time I could not figure out or see where it came from. As the diagram in the link below shows, this is the shaft seal just on the other side of the gimball bearing. It is Ref. #63 in the diagram @

http://volvopentaparts.stemtostern.com/VolvoDiagrams/ShowAssembly.asp?ID=sxsh1

I'm assuming the spring slipped off the seal when I pulled the shaft out. Anyone ever had this happen?

What are my options? 1) Pull the gimball bearing and seal and replace? 2) Is it possible to reinstall the spring with the bearing and seal in place? 3) What happens if left alone? Obviously not the best solution as the spring must be needed to ensure the seal around the shaft is maintained.

Also, what is the purpose of the seal? What is it trying to keep out or in? Grease, water, etc
?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.
