Drive removal 99 dp-sm 1.95

I have read all the stickies and have the shop manual and I either missed it or it doesn't say. I'm getting ready to remove drive to grease u-joints. Does drive have to be in gear?

no, because the shift cable runs thru the transom shield to the outside and you disconnect it at the linkage under the cover
