I’m new at this so pardon the newbie terminology. Had our new-to-us 1996 Chaparral 2130, 5.7L, Alpha drive out yesterday and I noticed a slight “clatter” when operating at idle speed waiting to trailer the boat. The noise was only audible when steering fairly tight circles. The noise was more pronounced with the drive trimmed up although I could still hear it when trimmed full down. I could not hear or feel any clatter while cruising, but naturally I was not turning such tight circles. U-joints shot?

OKCBubba

Re: Drive noise

the only way to check is to pull the drive and check the u-joints and gimble bearing for wear

tommays

Re: Drive noise

I've heard this on two different Alphas with fairly fresh drives. Same thing, tight turns at idle either way. I decided it was normal . . . Who knows, made me feel better.
