I'm new to owning a boat with a power plant like this. 2002 6.2L merc bravo 1 drive 150 hr on clock. Is it normal to hear a detectable amount of u-joint/drive noise when revving the motor in neutral on muffs in the driveway?

Re: Drive Noise

I had the drive off to replace the shift bellows. I also replaced the drive shaft bellows although it looked good. I greased the u-joints and the gimbal bearing. They both seemed good. It doesn't sound any different than before I did the work. I just don't know what the normal sounds are.

Re: Drive Noise

Hi,
I have a Penta DP-SM and it also has a slight noise in neutral and with the steering straight forward. Has always been like that. As soon as I turn the steering (in neutral) or apply power to the drive the sound goes away. I have checked gimbal bearing and U-joint without any failure and it is lubricated every year. I guess it is just a "construction thing". Of course the sound can be loud or worse that what I have and then of course there may be a problem to be solved. Anyway if it is only very minor should be nothing to worry about. Happy boating!
