Drive goes forward, but not reverse.

Search results didn't help to much. I just replaced the 5.7 motor in my 1989 Arriva. I aligned the motor, and installed the MC-1 drive (pre-alpha) and it likes going forward, but not reverse. In reverse I here some sounds that indicate that it's trying, but failing.

Now I'm not 100% sure this drive is even good, but I figure there are some things to investigate before I pull the drive. How can I check the shift linkage to see if it's doing it's job? Pull the linkage to the drive and try it manually?

Yes, you can try it manually. It could be the cable is worn. Did the cable get replaced during the work? There is also a setting to adjust the throw of the cable.

Wasn't replaced, but I purchased the boat as a project with a bad motor and no drive, so there are a lot of untested things on the boat. I don't like to run the motor n the trailer anymore than I have to. Without the motor running, If I attempt to shift the cable into gear manually, should the prop only turn one way by hand?
