drive fluid leaking?

I have been noticing a oily haze on the water near the drive when I stop the boat. I have been in the water and smelled what I think to be gear oil. I had the drive serviced at the dealer last year. Any Ideas on where it could be coming from? Also today I have noticed a decline in performance, it would not go past 3800 rpm. It is a 5.0 penta and Cobra SX drive, can low fluid cause that. I have checked the engine oil and it seems fine. Tomorrow I will be taking the boat out of the water to check the fluid level. If it is low how can I tell if water has seeped in?

Pull the drain plug, and see if you have chocolate colored oil; if you do, get it fixed now.

You can be pretty sure that if oil is coming out, water is getting in. Drain the outdrive oil and check for water.

I've also had this happen with leaking hydraulic fluid from the trim, although that wouldn't explain the performance issues.
