Could someone please give me a two-cent explanation of what the drive bellows are? I bought a used boat last Summer, and in the process of having it winterized, was told that the drive bellows are bad and need to be replaced, to the tune of about $200. Just looking to satisfy my own curiosity, nothing else.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Re: drive bellows

A bellows is a flexable rubber tube that seals the drive shaft that comes thru the transom. tilt the drive up and look inside
the drive, you will see it. If you see any cracks or rub wear replace it. If your comfortable with your mechanic then have it done. A bad bellows could sink your boat. Also
Always store your boat with the drive down.
$200 is'nt a bad price. There a pain in the ass to change

Re: drive bellows

I might add that it is important to correct a bad bellows as soon as possible. Not only can it sink your boat, but quickly do major damage to you driveshaft and gimbal bearing, and you dont want to know what they cost! Have your exhaust and shift cable(if you have one) bellows replaced at the same time.
