Hi Folks:

Over the winter my receiver hitch rusted a bit and the ball assembly doesn't want to go back it without a bit of persuasion with a hammer.

How do I smooth out the rust and keep it from reforming?

I guess one of those hitch covers is good for something other than advertising or being cute.

Riley,

See if you can find a small wire brush with an extra long shaft that you can put into your drill. Then spray the inside with Rust Oleum.

Good idea
How about a little lube to keep things flowing or will that attract sand and dirt etc. amd muck up the works again?

Riley,

Lube is fine as long as you keep it covered.

Personaly, I grease it up once a year and leave the reciever in all year round. It tends to be a converation piece when people are in a hurry going around the back of the car. And it does keep people from touching bumbers when parking.
