Draining tank?

I am now in process of getting ready to drain the gas tank. It appears to be 12 or so gallons, with 3 gallons or so in it.
I was thinking of using a siphone hose, but am not really interested in removing the tank.
Anything I can assess from looking at the gas in a glass bottle? My other alternative is to completely remove the tank and armstong it out of the boat. I think that I have old gas in it which may be the problem with the boat engine dying. I have that issue resolved now, (new hoses, new fuel pump, new bulb) and am turning to the source of the bad gas, the tank.
Frank

You didn't give much backgroud, but if I were working with an older boat that had been setting a long time with gas in the tank, I'd want to get a good look inside that tank. The carb(s) will probably need a complete tear-down and clean-out too.

A good water seperator/filter (looks like an auto filter) is also in order.

Re: Draining tank?

Hi guys,
Although the boat is 30 years old, I used it several times this year and went through several tanks last year, this year just added fuel.
I purchased a (to be installed tomorrow) seperator and new hoses and a new pump.
So the tank is the last to redo/clean, etc.
I was just looking for advise on the tank cleaning, etc.
Frank

frankk

I would syphon out as much as you can and fill it back up with fresh gas. Install the water/seperator filter before you prime it up, so it can catch any water or impurities that may be left over. An old or new primer bulb and hose make a good syphon. You should be fine after that. Might want to change out/Drain the filter after the first tank of gas.
