'72 chevy 250 IL6. I drained the block, manifold and riser today as it's gonna freeze here a couple of nights in a row. question is. i got no water to drain out of the riser. used a poker tool to make sure it wasn't plugged. is it normal not to have water drain out of the riser. i got a lot of water out of the block and manifold. <br />jim

Re: draining riser ?

Your fine...water will only go up and out the riser with the motor running, and water being pumped into the manifolds. Manifolds need draining, not the riser

Re: draining riser ?

Ziggy, the best way to see if a riser is clogged (without removing it)at the drain, is to have the motor running with water going to it and then remove the riser plug.It should gush out.If it does not gush, then start probing with a coat hanger while it is running and you wont believe the crap that comes out.I actually probed with a hanger until it would not go any further and then I put a locking pliers on it and hit the pliers pushing it in even further and the crap never stopped coming out.Charlie

Re: draining riser ?

thanks for the input guys. i just wanted to make sure that i don't freeze tonight. i just replaced the manifold and riser and don't have money to replace them again. last time i drained the riser(the old riser) i got water out of it. along with sand. had to probe it that time to get it to drain at all. this time nothing. and the probe found nothing like sand. i could feel the insides of the riser with my probe so i feel that i should be good to go for the darn freeze. i ain't done' boatin yet this year though. ;) i hope. thanks again...........

Re: draining riser ?

On an inline 4 or 6 the riser will drain with the manifold drain unless there is FWC system on the engine and if the manifold is in the FWC loop only the outflow from the heat exchanger goes out the riser. This should be the only time the riser must be drained by itself.

Re: draining riser ?

If you have any doubt at all about some water still being in there, invest $5 and pour a little antifreeze through each hose.Personally,I would be more concerned with the block unless of course it is FWC.Charlie

Re: draining riser ?

i'm not in doubt that its got no water in it now with everyones comments. it is raw water cooled, open system. thanks btdoctor. that was what i was thinking. the riser is higher than the manifold. anything in the riser would drain bact to the manifold & out that drain. anything on the other side would just go out the exhust. so it should be empty. thinking the reason for the old riser haveing water in it was perhaps it had a lot of sand build up in it and was plugged up and needed a reamin just like cc said. cc the block must be empty. it drained for several min. nice steady stream. manifold same thing. no sand in the manifold this time either. must be because they is new....

Methinks you should boat a little further from the beach! And sand eats impellers...
