Can anyone tell me how to drain the oil on a force 85? I can see how to get the Vent and Fill plugs out, but how does the oil drain out?

Hi Charles....welcome to iboats.

The oil drains out the drain plug on the lower unit. Look around for a large screw head like the vent and fill plugs or on some there was an allen head plug. Set the engine straight up and down and drain the old lube out. Refill through the fill plug until the lube comes out the vent hole.

Thanks for the response. Mine is an allen head plug. Is it a special allen screw head or a standard size?

BE absolutly sure you remove an allen bolt near the front lower area and not a screw near the side and bottom of the Lower unit. The allen bolt is a standard size I believe. If the screw is removed then you will have a nightmare on your hands. The screw hold the shift pivot and if removed maybe very hard to put back whithout disasembly of the Lower unit. The fill and Vent should be higher and together. Those have a big slot for a screwdriver. Replace the plastic seals when you do this you dont want water in the gears as it cause a headache and asprin is not going to fix it just lotsa money. :)

In the seloc manual it shows you squeezing iol from the bottom up. no need just put back the hexbolt and fill from the fill hole till it comes out the vent hole. Make sure your motor is level. Takes about 27 to 30 oz of marine gear lube.
